Thin ice has overtaken almost the entire surface of this pond during the night. It does recede during the sunny day, but the water is cooling steadily, and soon the ice will win.

Autumn leaves are entirely on the ground, but unseasonable warm weather has all but melted the autumn snow on the peaks, very unusual for this time of year.

This kind of frost forms on young, thin ice during very calm conditions, high humidity (at the pond) and chilly temperatures. Every bit of pond plant that poked above the surface on the pond's edge had a frost flower on it.

Milky Way, Cathedral Mountains reflected in open waters of a pond, remarkably still unfrozen.

Opportunity to get this 'reflection in open water' shot was very limited, because of the recent full moon, all the reflective ponds freezing up, and night sky getting dark enough.

In an hour or two, the moon rose and the sky became too bright, then by morning this pond had a thin layer of ice.

This is the same pond where I took the Milky Way reflection shot, this is a morning shot.

Clear skies, calm winds, all other ponds in the area freeze over at night but this one remains ice free. I'm thinking the water might be deeper in this pond, taking longer to cool.
