The magpie had been harassing the coyote as it was hunting.
I got lucky and caught both together as the magpie took flight.
I was using my Canon 400mm f/2.8 lens with a 1.4x extender, giving me 560mm at f/4 and it was mounted on a Gitzo TeleStudex Tripod.
This was back in my younger days, when lugging 30 pounds of camera gear wasn't a big deal.
Still have that lens and tripod and haven't used them in years.

Although he has his ears are down, he wasn't upset with me.
His ear had been injured in a fight and was hanging low.
I see that quite often in the fall.
Usually, it gets better, but, sometimes it is permanent.
I photographed him for about three years, then he disappeared.
But, I did back off!
I believe, he might have been a sibling to that other huge non-typical bull that was a favorite of mine to photograph.
Both of them, were pretty laid back and easy to work with.
We had lost all of our snow, so, I got my snow tires changed out.
I told my wife, "you watch, I probably just jinxed it"
I was referring to not having any snow.
Well, I was right!
It has been snowing almost very day now.
Not a lot, but, just enough to make things miserable.
