A small folding leaflet advertising private internal telephone systems issued by the London based Communications Systems Limited. Their postal address of "Strowger House" gives a clue as to their existance of the Liverpool based Automatic Telephone & Electric Co. Ltd. who were a major player in the UK telecommunications industry.

ATE had its origins in the reorganisation in the old Telegraph Manufacturing Company of Helsby; this was closely connected with British Insulated Cables of Helsby and the new company, formed in 1911, was known as the Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Company. One of the aims of ATM was to exploit the patents to the Strowger automatic exchange equipment that BIC had acquired rights to from the Chicago based Automatic Electric Company. The main works were in Liverpool.

The company was closely involved in the continued development of exchange equipment and switching systems for the GPO's growing telephone system helping to develop the "Director" system to help see off the use of foreign systems. This did not stop BIC creating the International Automatic Telephone Company in 1920, in conjunction with the American AT&T company to help supply ATM equipment to foreign markets and International effectively controlled ATM. The early 1930s saw various complex changes in both ownership, with ATM being fully acquired by International and, in 1935, BIC fully taking control. In 1936 the company, again closely associated with cable makers BIC, changed its name to Automatic Telephone and Electric Company Limited; the concern not only manufactured telecommunicaitons equipment but other products such as the technologically associated traffic signals as well as domestic appliances under the Xcel brand name.

A fine booklet issued by the London Midland & Scottish Railway giving details of Southern England destinations for winter holidays. These were mostly served by the Southern Railway but the text gives details of through trains from the North of England these being from Liverpool and Manchester to Brighton with connections to Sussex and Kent resorts along with trains from Lancashire and West Yorkshire to Bath and Weymouth including the "Pines Express".

The brochure's cover has artwork by George Ayling (1887 - 1960) a marine and landscape painter and teacher.
