Fairthorpe Ltd. was founded in 1954 by Air Vice Marshall Donald Bennett at Chalfont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire. The first cars were lightweight sportscars powered by motorcycle engine with glass fibre bodies called the Atom and the Atomata. In 1956 a new larger two seat Sports Car appeared, the Electron powered by a Coventry Climax engine, a lower priced version powered by a Triumph Spitfire engine followed and with 700 cars built was the companies mainstay until 1973. Around 20 of the closed version the Electrina were also built. Small numbers of other models were built at this time, in 1961 the company moved to premises at Gerrards Cross and in 1964 to Denham both still within Buckinghamshire. In 1967 David Bennetts son, Torix joined the company and there followed a new car the TX-GT which was based on the Triumph GT6 and the TX Tripper which was produced by a company registered to Torix Bennett, Technical Exponents) working out of the same premises, but by this time the market for hand built small production sports cars had decline. The last cars were built around 1976, both companies are still listed but are inactive.

Fairthorpe Electron Minor 3 seater Mk.1 (1958) Engine 948cc Standard

Registration Number 789 ERO
Manufactured in kit form in 1958 and supplied to Frank Collins for £425. Built up in just 30 days in his garage at his home with no power or lighting. Registered 18th November 1958, used as a road car throughout the week and raced at weekends including being part of the original Fairthorpe works team. The car was sold on in 1963. After many years in 1987 Frank and his son Martin who by this time were restoring Fairthorpe happened upon a chance meeting with a fellow enthusiast who had just purchased the car, after much persuasion Martin was able to purchase the car with its original number plate in 1989. After an initial start at restoration the project had to be put on hold but a rash promise in April 2009 by Martin to his father that he would restore the car in time for the Silverstone 2009 Classic, in just 14 weeks. This was achieved and the car also completed the Retro Run to the circuit, for the 2010 Silverstone Classic.
Well done Martin and thankyou for returning to Silverstone in 2010
