In the wet season Tonle Sap lake expands up to four times its volume, and the water level rises up to 10m, so the houses are built on stilts. In the wet season the main street and fields are submerged and all transport occurs by boat. The lower levels of the multi-stroy houses are used to store firewood, animals, and provisions for the wet season.
