There are four Seraphim depicted in the pendentives (the triangular sections between the arches and dome) of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. These angels faces were originally covered during the Ottoman period when the Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque. In 2009, during restoration work, one of the angelic figures was uncovered, revealing its face. This particular Seraphim is often referred to as the “unmasked angel” because its face had been hidden for centuries.
