Shingle Street looks a desolate spot. Ironically - given its name - it’s probably the only settlement in Suffolk without a street of any kind, just a few scattered houses. But there is an awful lot of shingle. Along the water’s edge the waves have deposited ridge after ridge of pebbles that can be tricky to scramble over. The lagoons look tempting but there are quicksands around them which need to be avoided. Nowadays, even on a colourful morning like this one, its isolation seems eerie but compelling.

I was up early to catch this sunrise at Skagsanden beach in the Lofoten archipelago. No-one else was there. I took the photo just a minute or two before the sun appeared over the horizon.

Pine island sits in Derryclare Lough in Connemara, Co Galway, in Ireland. Against a backdrop of a group of mountains known as the Twelve Bens, it's also close to the Wild Atlantic Way. The tall slender trees are all Scots Pines. It's a popular stop with photographers for reasons that are obvious.
