Holy Trinity Church in Bosham dates from Saxon times and is the oldest church in West Sussex.
It is understood King Canute, who reigned between 1016 and 1035, had a palace in Bosham and appears to have a connection to the church through the death of his daughter. She is believed to have drowned in the nearby millpond and a stone slab set in the floor of the church states she was the daughter of the King aged about 8 years. Her name is not recorded.
I was intrigued by the stone plaque mounted in the wall by the gate which mentions another sad story of a young life lost through drowning so thought I would investigate further.
Jenefer Wornum was a wealthy heiress who lived a stones throw from the Church at Bosham Manor. Having obtained a degree in England, she went to Australia to study Zoology. She drowned when her luxury yacht was washed onto rocks during a bad storm off the New South Wales coast in 1950. The gates at the entrance were designed by her father, a renowned architect, as a memory of his daughter.
A sad story of two young lives lost by drowning both with a connection to a small village in Sussex but almost 1000 years apart!

Uppark House was built circa 1690 for the Earl of Tankerville but sold in 1747 to Sir Matthew Featherstonehaugh and his wife Sarah who redecorated it extensively. Much of the collections inside were acquired on their grand tour. It commands fabulous views over the South Downs.
Parts of the interior were devastated by fire in 1989 but have now been restored by the National Trust who manage and maintain the property.

Boxgrove Priory was founded by Robert de Haye around 1066 and dissolved on the orders of King Henry VIII in 1536. All that remains today is this Church dedicated to St Mary and St Blaise which stands in a very 'English' country church yard.

Have visited the ancient village of Bosham in Sussex many times over the years. It is usually a very busy place as it is located on the edge of Chichester Harbour and is popular with boat owners and tourists. However, on the day this photograph was taken it was unusally quiet with many of the boats already taken out of the water for some protection during the winter months.
As far as I am aware this house is not a listed building but its location is superb overlooking the Bosham Channel. The land from where the photograph was taken belongs to the National Trust who maintain and protect it for public use and from any future development.
