Blenheim Palace is one of the many historic attractions in Britain that now requires an advanced booking before you visit. The day we booked for turned out to be one, if not the, hottest day of year and this somewhat limited what we could see on what is a vast building and estate. This particular view is of part of the west elevation of Blenheim Palace taken across the water terraces.
Blenheim Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the 12th Duke of Marlborough. It is the only non - royal Palace in Britain to be designated as a Palace. It was built between 1705 and 1722 and was originally intended to be a reward to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough for his military victory against the French and Bavarians in the War of Spanish Succession. This culminated in the Battle of Blenheim in 1704 which gave its name to the Palace.

On our recent visit to Blenheim Palace, this vehicle was parked outside the main entrance with a Winston Churchill look a like standing alongside. A small crowd of visitors were around it so we moved on and had a cup of coffee.
When we returned about 45 minutes later to join the queue to go inside the palace, Winston had disappeared and there was nobody around the vehicle so I couldn’t resist the chance of a photograph.
There is nothing to directly link Winston Churchill to this vehicle other than it was manufactured in the same year World War 2 started. As a wartime leader, it is quite possible he would have had such a vehicle at his disposal.

As we approach winter, the hours of daylight have significantly reduced as have the temperatures and amounts of sunshine in the Northern Hemisphere. For many people it is a depressing time of year so thought I would post a photograph from a very sunny day back in the summer - possibly one of the hottest days of the year!

Taken at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire on a hot summers day last year. The vast Palace is the home of the 12th Duke of Marlborough. It is one of the premier tourist attractions in Britain and the only non royal Palace in the country.
Blenheim Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was built between 1705 and 1722 and was originally intended to be a reward to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough for his military victory against the French and Bavarians in the War of Spanish Succession. This culminated in the Battle of Blenheim in 1704 which gave its name to the Palace.
One of its notable claims to fame is that Winston Churchill was born here in 1874 whilst his parents were staying there. He died in 1965 and is buried in nearby Bladon Church.

Made a visit to Greys Court a few days ago – a National Trust property near Henley on Thames.
Whenever I have tried to photograph this aspect of the building on previous visits it has proved difficult as it is the public exit from the house and visitors tend to linger about before moving on. Today my luck was in!
The estate originally belonged to the de Grey family when it was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 but over the centuries it has changed hands several times. The last owner was Sir Felix and Lady Brunner who acquired it in 1937 and bequeathed it to the National Trust in 1969. It is now maintained by them on behalf of the nation.
