Drove through the lovely village of Cavendish in Suffolk recently and couldn’t resist stopping to capture this scene.

The cottages are grade 2 listed buildings dating from circa 16th to 17th century. They are currently almshouses, which sadly were badly damaged in a fire in the early 1970’s. They were rebuilt in 1972 and are operated by a trust.

The Church in the background is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin and dates from circa 14th to 17th century although the tower dates from the 13th century. It is a Grade 1 listed building. The Domesday Book compiled for William the Conqueror after the Norman invasion of 1066 shows the village was previously served by a Saxon Church.

This doorway in the gardens at Blickling Hall in Norfolk captured my interest as I liked the aging of both door and brickwork. This contrasted with the green of the new life that Spring has brought about.

In medieval times the village of Lavenham in Suffolk was one of the richest in England. It thrived on the wool trade in the 15th and 16th centuries when local merchants became very wealthy.

One the ways they could show their wealth was in the building of houses which .has resulted in the village having many half timbered properties that have stood the test of time over many centuries. There are over 200 grade 1 and grade 2 listed structures in the village today.

This house, known as Cordwainers, dates from circa 15th century and is located in the High Street. It is a timber frame and plastered building with grade 2 listed protection. In the past it was the One Bell Inn but is now a private house. I particularly like the different shapes and sizes of the timber beams, the colour of the plasterwork and the blocked up doorway on the right. A magnificent property!

The village of Lavenham in Suffolk has over 200 listed buildings, some dating back as far as the middles ages when the village became one the most prosperous places in England through its connection with the wool trade.

These cottages are grade 2 listed structures and probably date from circa 15-16th century. As listed buildings they cannot be demolished without prior approval from the local authority – in this case Babergh District Council.

Photographing these cottages, and many other buildings in Lavenham, is often difficult because of the large number of parked cars on the streets – hence this is more tightly cropped than I would have liked. Nonetheless, the message built to last still comes across loud and clear!

This Jacobean stately home stands in 5,000 acres of parkland near the village of Aylsham in Norfolk. It was built on the ruins of a Tudor building for Sir Henry Hobart in 1616. It was left to the National Trust in 1940 upon the death of the last owner, Philip Kerr, the 11th Marquis of Lothian. It is now managed on behalf of the nation.

The hall is a grade 1 listed building whilst other properties and structures in the grounds are grade 2 listed. This gives the estate legal protection from demolition or substantial alterations without prior approval of the Local Authority – Broadland District Council.
