I love this sign and would like to see it lit up at night. The Belair Inn is advertised as "A retro 50's motel with 21st century amenities.' They certainly got it right with their sign. I'd definitely stay if I needed to stop over in T or C.

A nearby creek and a local Apache chief, Cuchillo Negro (Black Knife) gave this town it's name. Due to it's location of midway between Chloride and Winston’s mines and the railroad at Engle, Cuchillo flourished as a stage stop and trade center from the 1880s to the 1930s. As the surrounding mines began to close the village of Cuchillo sadly went into decline. Floods in the 1920’s followed by economic depression mostly killed the town. There's a few houses scattered around and the population is around 35 but Cuchillo has the feel and look of a ghost town. Worth stopping if you are passing through.

This is possibly an old barn/stables and is situated behind the now gone dance hall and next to St. Joseph's church.

Cuchillo Negro (Black Knife) Creek to the south of the town has continually been a threat. It has often completely destroyed sections of the town. St. Joseph’s church has fallen victim of the creek twice completely leveling it.. The last time the church was rebuilt was in 1906. The church still floods from time to time Masses are still occasionally held here. Another pretty NM church.

A welcoming partry of a mama quail and her ten chicks greeted us upon our arrival at Cuchillo. The Old Cuchillo Bar and Store has seen so much life over it's time. The original building in 1850 featured rough boards and hand-hewn vigas and thick adobe layers for insulation. A tin roof was later added to protect the building from the elements. In 1883 it was adapted for a post office. A boarding house, a saloon, a store all added to the changes. A devastating fire in 2000 left the building vulnerable and open to the weathers. It's said the bar still contains many of the original artifacts. It does appear to be for sale. I looked for someone to ask about it's history but was completely out of luck. I would've loved to see inside. I found some really great history information here www.cuchillobar.com/history-of-the-cuchillo-bar-for-sale.... . How vibrant the town of Cuchillo must have once been! Now peace and tranquility are the most notable when you arrive here.

Seems like everything in Truth or Consequences is as unique as the town's name. The town was originally called Hot Springs but changed it's name to Truth or Consequences in 1950. Ralph Edwards, the host of a popular radio quiz show announced that he would air the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. Hot Springs won. It's name is usually shortened to T or C. Just 30 miles away is the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport Virgin Galactic plans to provide sub-orbital spaceflights to the paying public. Let's hope they don't rename the town again to Virgin or Branson, I like T or C better :)
