The Camborne and Redruth Tramways operated an electric freight and passenger tramway service between Camborne and Redruth. It operated between 1902 and 1934 comprising of 6 open top double deck cars (48 seaters), 2 single deck cars (34 seaters) plus 2 freight locomotives. The time for the full journey was 23 minutes and the fare initially 2d. Extra trams were put on for holiday and big football matches - all County Rugby matches being then played at Redruth. The tram house, where passengers and operators waited to board the tram.

Historically, Redruth was a small market town overshadowed by its neighbours until a boom in the demand for copper ore during the 18th century. Redruth quickly became one of the largest and richest mining areas in Britain and the town's population grew markedly, although most miners' families remained poor.
The area of West End Redruth, until the late 19th century, served as the financial and administrative quarter of Redruth. Many of the historical shop fronts still remain today even though they look worse for wear.

The name Redruth, pronounced 'Red-rooth' derives from its Cornish name, Rhyd-ruth. Rhyd an older form of 'Res', which is a Cornish equivalent to a ford across a river, a common Celtic word It is the -ruth not the Red- part of the name which means the colour red. My own thought is that maybe the ford ran red from mine waste?
Historically, Redruth was a small market town overshadowed by its neighbour Camborne until a boom in the demand for copper ore during the 18th century. Copper ore had mostly been discarded by the Cornish tin-mining industry but was now needed to make brass, an essential metal in the Industrial Revolution. Surrounded by copper ore deposits, Redruth quickly became one of the largest and richest mining areas in Britain and the town's population grew, although most miners' families remained poor. The very beautiful buildings in the town show off what was once a wealthy town.
Actress Kristin Scott Thomas, electronic musician Luke Vibert, baritone Benjamin Luxon, opera singer Alan Opie. the co founder of Fleetwood Mac, Mick Fleetwood, were all born here. For me it was the closest town to the village Carharrack where I lived for so many years.

The Redruth Drapery Stores Limited had stores on both sides of the street in the West End area of Redruth. The company was first incorporated 5 November 1919.
Long closed as the furniture department. I only ever remember this store as being Arts and Graphics back in the 1970's. Many hours were spent here buying art supplies. It closed as an art store in 2012 and then became The Green Room (a bar) and then West End Bar and Grill. The West End Bar and Grill closed last week after only a short time of trading and this wonderful building's lease is now up for leasehold again.

Fortunately through all it's changes over the years the building has retained the magnificent curved glass windows. HWW!

Redruth, Cornwall.

As an aside Mick Fleetwood, co founder of Fleetwood Mac was born in Redruth.
