The North Country Trail joins up with the Wabash Cannonball Trail, which runs on two lines originally established by the Wabash Railroad, in two different spots. The Trail also shortcuts through Maumee State Forest and the unique habitat of Oak Openings Preserve Metropark.

Turkeyfoot Wildlife Area, Public Hunting & Fishing License Required. North Country Trail.
North Turkey Foot Area is part of the Mary Jane Thurston State Park although Turkey Foot lies on the west side of the Maumee River. The Turkey Foot area lies in a D-shaped section of dense forest boardered by the river and Old State Rt 24. There is a 4 mile hiking / biking trail that run around the perimeter of North Turkey Foot and also a few shorter trail loops in the interior of the forest. Trails vary from wide groomed double track to ungroomed narrow singletrack. Terrain is flat and can be muddy in areas. There are some old barns and an old steel bridge that spans Turkey Foot Creek.

Maumee River Ghost Town/Damascus (present Liberty Center) Ohio.
Damascus was platted at the site of a former Native American village from the mid-1700s called Prairie Du Masque (Prairie Des Mascoutins). It was temporarily the original county seat before that honor was moved to the booming town of Napoleon in 1835 just 3 years after it was platted. Charles Gunn was the first known postmaster of Damascus. He was succeeded by David Bucklin, Norman Mead, E. S. Dodd, John Burlin, J. R. Thompson, Benjamin A. High, D. C. Smith, and A. J. Wheeler. Damascus still had a saw mill on the south side of the main intersection and a school on the west side of Co Rd 8 just south of the cemetery listed in the 1875 county atlas. Damascus was listed in the 1910 State Highway atlas and faded into oblivion before the mid-1900s.
The Maumee River watershed was once part of the Great Black Swamp, a remnant of Glacial Lake Maumee, the proglacial ancestor of Lake Erie. The 1,500-square-mile (3,900 km2) swamp was a vast network of forests, wetlands, and grasslands, a rich habitat for numerous species of birds, animals, fish and flora. During the 19th century, European-American settlers struggled to drain the swamp and to convert the land to farmland; they dramatically altered the habitat, reducing areas where species could flourish

In 1742, a tribe of Kickapoo requested permission from Montreal's Governor to move to a Mascoutin village on both sides of the river here. French "Coureurs de Bois" traders named the wide floodplain "La Prairie des Mascoutins" (The Meadow of the Mascoutin). In 1764, Captain Thomas Morris explored this newly acquired British territory, and met the prophetic dreamer Chief Katapelleecy here. General Anthony Wayne's troops victoriously returned from The Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 and burned "Prairie de Masque." The Treaty of Detroit in 1807 created a hunting reservation to the east, allowing settlers to acquire the surrounding lands. Ethnic tensions climaxed in 1812, when an American Captain Logan was mortally wounded near here. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 caused the remaining tribes to move west. Henry County, Ohio.

Maumee River (pronounced /mɔːˈmiː/) (Shawnee: Hotaawathiipi; Miami-Illinois: Taawaawa siipiiwi) is a river running from northeastern Indiana into northwestern Ohio and Lake Erie in the United States. It is formed at the confluence of the St. Joseph and St. Marys rivers, where Fort Wayne, Indiana, has developed, and meanders northeastwardly for 137 miles (220 km) through an agricultural region of glacial moraines before flowing into the Maumee Bay of Lake Erie. The city of Toledo is located at the mouth of the Maumee. The Maumee was designated an Ohio State Scenic River on July 18, 1974. The Maumee watershed is Ohio’s breadbasket; it is two-thirds farmland, mostly corn and soybeans. It is the largest watershed of any of the rivers feeding the Great Lakes, and supplies five percent of Lake Erie’s water.
