With a wingspan of up to 10 inches, the Atlas Moth (Attacus atlas) is one of the world's largest insects. For comparison, the average male human handspan is around 8.9 inches.

Native to Southeast Asia, the adult Atlas Moth lacks fully formed mouthparts, and is thus unable to eat, subsisting entirely on fat reserves accumulated during the larval stage. As a result, they live for only a few days, during which their sole objective is seeking out a mate. This one was photographed last summer at the Chicago Botanic Garden Butterflies & Blooms exhibit.
