Here is one of the robin fledglings caught on the edge of the nest in the late afternoon sun last Saturday. Late the next day, this chick, along with both of his siblings, had left the safety of the nest under the eaves on our house. Their departure was right on schedule, almost exactly two weeks after they were hatched. Fledgling robins are capable of flying only short distances when they leave the nest, but become capable of sustained flight within about two weeks. Even after they leave the nest, the young robins are protected and fed by their parents until they learn to forage on their own.

Here is a shot of two of the three fledgling robins, still in the nest last Sunday morning. Late on Sunday afternoon, these chicks, along with a third sibling, left the safety of the nest under the eaves on our house. Their departure was right on schedule, almost exactly two weeks after they were hatched. Fledgling robins are capable of flying only short distances when they leave the nest, but become capable of sustained flight within about two weeks. For today's DailyShoot assignment: Illustrate choice in a photograph today. Be obvious or subtle. Your, ahem, choice.

The baby robins have hatched in the nest under the eaves on our house. I'm not sure how the parents choose which of the three to feed when they arrive with fresh food. Maybe the most aggressive chicks get fed the most. Based on watching them, there are clearly two robins doing the feeding. According to Wikipedia, both the adult female and male participate in the feeding and protection of the chicks. The chicks are blind when they first hatch. Today was day three for these chicks.

Mama Robin is still keeping a close watch when we're in the back yard. We're waiting for her three eggs to hatch.

Here's a shot taken a few days ago of the three baby robins in the nest under the eaves of our house. These little guys were hatched just over a week ago, and according to what I have read, can be expected to leave the nest about two weeks after hatching. Another shot of the chicks actually being fed by one of the parents is in my photostream here: www.flickr.com/photos/62425933@N04/5886751056/in/photostream
