With more than 68,000 acres, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County in Illinois is the largest forest preserve district in the United States, and includes more than 300 miles of trails. Given the District’s location in the densely populated Chicago metropolitan area, it’s not surprising that there are places such as this, where only a fence separates the trail from a busy road next to an even busier freeway.

What’s on the horizon for the world economy?
For today’s DailyShoot assignment: Make a photograph that emphasizes the horizon today and post it.
I combined a couple of old games for this shot: a Risk game board that shows a world map, and Jenga, a game that involves players stacking wooden blocks into a tower until the tower eventually tumbles over.

Soap Box Derby racers move down a track set up in up in a former Sam's Club store in Barrington, Illinois. Cars are entirely gravity powered, and launch down a ramp to start the race.
The races this weekend were part of a series of youth-oriented Soap Box Derby competition events that will culminate in July, when local winners from across the U.S., Canada, Germany and Japan will travel to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the "All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship." It will mark the 86th running of the All-American, since its inception in Dayton, Ohio, in 1934.

My new Nikon 18-300mm zoom makes a convenient walk-around lens, but I have discovered that I sometimes get bothersome vignetting when shooting wide open (f/5.6) at 300mm. So for this slide, I just went with it and tried to take advantage of the dark edges. :-)
