“Explosion at Shin Kong Department Store”
Taichung City, Taiwan February 13, 2025 11:33 am.
I was on a bus, about 2 to 3 blocks from this department store, when I heard a noise. Which is not uncommon in Taiwan, either fireworks or construction…it’s always something that’s very common here, so I didn’t give it much thought. As I got off the bus I could hear sirens from both fire department and from ambulances. Again, it’s the city and you hear this all the time but this time it was constant. There seem to be a never ending supply of ambulances and fire trucks coming from all directions this time. I didn’t know where the event was happening so I just went to lunch and didn’t give it too much more thought… but I was curious.
I ordered lunch and while I was waiting, I noticed on my Facebook feed that the department store, which is about two or three blocks from where I was having lunch, had a gas explosion and had blown out a huge portion of the 11th or 12th floor, I’m not sure which.
So after lunch, I thought, I better go over there and get some photos. Luckily, I had my digital camera with me, but unfortunately I didn’t have a telephoto lens, but it was a good lens anyway.

Security was pretty tight because the situation was still being assessed with drones and other sources. I couldn’t get very close and the photos you see are maybe an hour after the explosion happened.
Such a tragic event and the stories of casualties are already leaking out. Truly sad.
I hope things get sorted out soon and for those that were affected by the explosion I hope they heal up quickly and live to see better days.
