I am home… I have been away far too long, but I am back in my element- my home away from home.
The drive from Louisville, Colorado to Rocky Mountain National Park takes you through canyons and climbs through the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. There is a point in the road where you come out of the clearing and see the valley where both Estes Park and the gateway to the national park rests- it’s an amazing site to see and I just said to myself over and over, “My God… My God…”
I was reminded of how much I loved these mountains and the views: the spirit in the air, the freshness, and the pure wild out there to experience. Once I got my camp set up I went on some expeditions to see the elk of the park and the many different shades of leaves in the changing aspens. It was such a beautiful day and pictures do no justice.

This picture is a homage to my daughter…
When she was seven I took her to Colorado for some camping fun. On one such morning, while I was breaking down camp, she sat in a nice and toasty truck munching on bacon while watching her mother and I freezing our tails off. She was giggling and laughing, and to this day we still laugh about that moment.
Morning cooking is the best in my opinion. Warm coffee brewed over a Coleman stove just lingers in the air. There are quite a few different foods to be made that just somehow taste better when cooked and eaten outdoors. Bacon happens to be one of those!
I was surprised that it wasn’t colder at nights than it was. The weekend before I came it snowed so thank God I dodged that bullet!!

Today was breathtaking…
I took up and drove down to the far East side of the park to get a better view of Longs Peak. Longs Peak is a Lifetime Dream of mine to climb, and it is not for the faint of heart, rising well over 14,000 feet. Just looking at it takes my breath away and while one side of me says “there’s no way in the world I can ever climb that thing”, the other side of me says, “you’ve said that about so many other things in life: this is just another challenge to overcome.”
I got to see my camp spots from the last time I was up here- some 12 years ago. That is far too long a time between visits. I also got some great pictures of Estes Cone which was a hike I mastered last time. Looking at these two spots I got inspired to get back into a good shape and get out there in this beautiful world. I have really missed this beautiful park and I so want to explore it all over again…

So long… for now…
It was bittersweet leaving Rocky Mountain National Park today. I had an awesome trip and got to see some amazing views. I ran across bears, elk, fox, rabbits, and met some great people. I had fantastic weather, great food, and some cozy campfires. I felt a re-kindling in my heart, one that I don’t think will dwindle any time soon.
There were of course some things that I wished I had done and did not get to do; I promised myself that I would not allow such long distances between visits, and I’m already planning my next series of adventures. I would have stayed a bit longer, but now it is off to Wyoming to complete another lifetime dream: Devils Tower!
On a side note: it will be nice to get back in touch with the outside world. Apparently Sprint has terrible service in states outside of Texas.
