Photo of a photo, the ranger gave me this morning of the beached elephant seal pup that stayed here for a week.
i am posting this only to remind of Earth Day - just look at the debris, human made! - and to beg you: there are trash cans everywhere!!!! In the past couple of weeks, hundreds of dead birds have been found on this and other beaches around here , some of them with plastic in their stomachs, some strangled from cords floating in the water..........

Earth Day is on March 29, 2008!!!!

(Found this morning (3-18--08) at Fort Baker, Marin County. The animal has been stranded for 2 days, is being watched by the Marine Mammal Center and is said to be alright. As there is little traffic at this beach, it has been decided to leave /her and hope that she will find her way back out to the Pacific. The green stripe was put on by the MMC to mark the animal (green because she was found on St Patrick's Day........) The ranger named her "josephine Baker"......

Today (3-23-08) she swam back into open water! Hurrah!!!!

UPDATE: ..and on 3-25-08, J. was found again on another beach, even further inland........she will now finally be taken to the Marine Mammal Center tomorrow where they can care for her and protect her from people, dogs and coyotes........!!!

As the ranger and i were picking up debris that had washed up on the beach, the seal tried to follow us, barking, obviously looking for some sort of company. a lonely littlething , I just hope she/he makes it......

UPDATE: I called the the Marine Mammal Center here in Sausalito and was assured that they would send someone out tomorrow to check on her - it's a girl. They also told me that she is about 10 weeks old, is well fed and can live off her "fat" for a few days.
