An amazing cluster of Fairy Inkcap fungi thriving on a decaying log in woodland at Chedworth on the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire today. They have small bonnet-shaped caps, averaging around 1 cm in diameter, which are pleated with thin grooves on top radiating outwards from the centre.

These gregarious little fungi occur from early spring until the onset of winter and are common in Britain and Ireland and throughout Europe and North America.

On the Friday evening when the Northern Lights were spectacular, I managed to venture into the countryside without the means to connect my camera to my tripod. I spent an hour or so trying to get images handheld but eventually got frustrated, drove home to get the tripod head plate I needed and went back out in search of a good place to photograph the sky. I ended up in Litton in Derbyshire at about 02:00. The sharp red bursts of earlier in the evening had been replaced by a wider palette of colours and some thin cloud had moved in, creating a mackerel effect in the sky.
