New in 1959, numbered D3757, this shunter was withdrawn from Heaton, in 09/1993. This class was the standard class of diesel locomotive designed for shunting. From 1953 to 1962, 996 locomotives were produced, making it the most numerous of all British locomotive classes. This one carries LE - Landore depot codes, Landore being near Swansea. Class 08 - 08944, on the right of the photo, was built at BR Darlington Works, numbered D4174, in 08/1962, and was re-numbered 08944, under TOPS, in 04/1974. It was transferred to Mainline Freight Limited in 1994 and was withdrawn from service at Old Oak Common in 04/1998. It arrived at the ELR in early 2001. Similar 08164, seen on the left, is preserved in BR Blue. The locomotive was built at BR Darlington Works in 01/1956 and was initially numbered 13232. It was renumbered D3232 and then 08164 under TOPS. It was withdrawn from Gateshead Traction Depot in 03/1986 and sold to RFS Industries for further use at Doncaster before moving into preservation with the ELR and arriving in 01/1998. Resident shunter BR Class 09 - 09024 was built at Horwich in 1961 while visiting Class 08 - 08721 was built at Crewe in 1960 and is still operational at Longsight. Built by British Railways Crewe in 1960, the ubiquitous class 08 Shunters received the nickname 'Gronk' by enthusiasts. This smart example remains operational as a pilot at Longsight and is seen here at Bury Bolton Street when visiting the East Lancs.
