Father Time is flummoxed by the pixies who are climbing his hourglass and yanking on his hair (besides hairpulling, "take time by the forelock" also means "To seize an opportunity"). A couple of other impudent pixies are reading through his insurance policy. Perhaps Mr. Time should consider using his scythe to ward off intruders.

The words "The Prudential Insurance Co., Newark, N.J." appear on the banner that winds around the policy-reading pixies. The Prudential company distributed this advertising trade card to potential customers in the late nineteenth-century to suggest that they seize the opportunity to purchase insurance. The other side of the card describes Prudential as "one of the soundest and most progressive life insurance companies in the United States."

A close-up of the vignette illustration that appears on a 1905 New Year greeting in the form of a check.

That's Father Time, who's holding his scythe as he drives an automobile through all the coins and currency on the ground. Is that Baby New Year with a cornucopia in the back seat?

A 1905 New Year greeting in the form of a check.

I like the vignette at upper left (see an enlarged view). It shows Father Time holding his scythe as he drives an automobile through all the coins and currency on the ground. Is that Baby New Year holding a cornucopia in the back seat?

Frederick E. Ryckman, who signed the check, was a sales agent for the National Cash Register Company. His name appeared in various Waterbury, Connecticut, directories published in the early twentieth century.
