Seen in Maastricht, close to the Vrijthof. Because there was no more room within the city, houses were sometimes built over the stream, such as this house built on a bridge over the Jeker.
This house is a typical example of the Maasland Renaissance style, which generally uses the local soft marl, with round heads and triglyphs decorating the frieze.
This house was built in the third quarter of the seventeenth century, according to a strict mathematical layout. The facades are made of brick, alternating with so-called marlstone bacon layers. The marl strips at the height of the upper floors are also enlarged with marlstone water mouldings. The staggered corner blocks are also made of marl, while the mouldings around the doors and cross-windows are built of bluestone (Arduin, probably from Belgium).
There are stepped gables on no less than two sides of this house. A profile has been applied to the marlstone steps. The gutters rest on the cornice, which runs around the entire building. The cornice itself is supported by consoles, which are decorated alternately with round and diamond-shaped ornaments. The doorframe is made of bluestone and bears the date MDCCXXXIII (1733). This frame was brought over from elsewhere during a restoration. The window above the door (invisible from this angle) is original. A modern side effect of building this house over a stream was the apparent cleanliness of the residents who had their 'shit house' right above the Jeker. The role of hygiene in health as we know it today, was not yet understood in 1733. You can also see from the other houses in this picture that the Jeker river was used as an open-sewer; this was considered normal in cities at that time. This house initially served as a home for the rector of the Grey Sisters, who had their monastery on the grounds behind it in the current Museum of Natural History.
