I always wondered what that bell under the bulls neck was good for. I guess the cow thinks it is a muzzle warmer. ;-) I saw 10 moose today. 5 bulls, 4 cows and 1 calf. Nice calm day, no wind.

I posted a picture of this bull several weeks ago when he was in velvet. Amazing how much sharper those antler tines look after that fuzzy velvet is rubbed off. He still lets me work in close. This was taken at 100mm - F2.8 - 1/400th - ISO 640. Should have changed the ISO. It was pretty poor lighting when I first found him. Saw at least 14 moose and possibly as many as 17-20. They were moving around a lot. So, was only positive of seeing 14. Only 3 bulls. With so many moose in a small area, it can get exciting real fast.

Went out hiking looking for bulls yesterday morning. Really foggy. That happens a lot this time of year. Still good exercise. Did see 5 moose. One bull. But, didn't take any pictures worth posting. Was hoping to see some of the larger bulls like this one. Hopefully that will happen in the upcoming weeks.

He has his ears back, but, not because he is upset. He was listening to another bull that was behind him.

I went hiking both Saturday and Sunday looking for moose or whatever I could find. I saw 12 moose Saturday and 13 moose Sunday. I worked some with this guy. He was pretty calm. So, I decided to try to get some shots of him walking into the camera. I got quite a few. He would get up to about 15-20 feet from me and then I would back off. He seemed fine with it. Didn't get aggressive. I wouldn't even think of trying it in about two weeks, after the rut starts. I had to go out an hour before sunrise to find them. The bulls in particular disappear into the heavy alders soon after sunrise. Problem with going out so early is the lighting. Very dark. It was also very overcast and misting rain. But, once I found them, I just stayed with this guy till he bedded down. At one time I had 8 moose that I could see all at the same time. Keeping track of that many can sometimes prove to get quite exciting. The cows often take exception if you get between them and the bull. Once the rut starts it gets really bad. They don't want anybody or anything up close to the bull they are with.
