For the next three days, I'll be posting photographs of ungulates exhibiting the flehmen behavior. This mule deer buck was on the scent of these three does. He was making low grunts too as he followed them around. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA, November 2024

Happy National Card Playing Day. You all know I’m a fan of the retro style pinups and this national day fits right in. Grab a deck of cards and invite your friends over for a game night on December 28 to celebrate. This unofficial holiday is dedicated to one of the most popular pastimes that has been around since at least the 9th century. A standard pack of cards may be used for playing a variety of card games, with varying elements of skill and chance, some of which are played for money. Some of the top card games include Spades, Poker, Solitaire, Spite and Malice, Hearts, Spoons, Gin Rummy, and a host of others. Or put a hat upside down and see who can fly the most in. Or … use them as props in a pinup model shoot. Anytown, USA, Any time

Why does it look like otters are always having fun? I don't know why I looked up the origins of Ring Around the Rosie, but was quite surprised by the answer. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA, October 2024

“Ring Around the Rosie” is a folk song that first arose during the Great Plague. The song was written by James FitzGerald and was first published in Kate Greenaway’s original edition of Mother Goose in 1881.
The rhyme is about the bubonic plague and Black Death. The plague devastated England and most of Western Europe in places like Germany. Many of the lines in “Ring Around the Rosie” reference symptoms of the plague, such as sneezing, coughing, and the red circular rash or a rosy rash that was present in different forms of plague.
People thought that posies would remedy symptoms of the illness, hence their reference in the song. Additionally, the titular “rosie” refers to rashes that were symptomatic of the Black Death, while “a-tishoo” references the sneezing symptoms of the plague. Finally, everyone “falling down” at the end of the rhyme references death.

Three bulls including Hoback (the big old bull on the right) hanging out at a creek with a cow. The rut is over at this point, so the bulls are relaxed and perhaps just wondering who the father is. I purposely used a closed aperture for a big depth of field, which ended up also showing the telephone lines in the distance. Next season I'll either open the aperture or get in the creek or both. This year, today is both Christmas and the beginning of Hanukkah, so Happy Holidays to all who celebrate. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA, October, 2024
