A couple days ago, you saw the first photograph I took at the Grand Canyon of the moonset at Mather Point. This is the last photograph I took on this visit to the Grand Canyon. Michael Medford (a National Geographic photographer) describes Magic Light as, "You'll know it when you see it." It was a gloomy, cold, windy morning at Moran Point, but I thought I would try for a sunrise. What happened was even better. A storm was coming in from the west. For a brief moment, the rising sun peaked through the cloud cover just enough to highlight some of the canyon. It was so windy, I had to turn on the camera's image stabilizer despite being on the tripod, plus put my weight on the tripod to steady it further. Even with that, I was concerned I wouldn't get a sharp shot ... but was very pleased when I finally uploaded the raw file for editing. This capped off a great week of photography. Moran Point is named after Thomas Moran, a great American landscape painter who came to the canyon for his first time in 1873. Below Moran Point is Red Canyon, easy to understand how it got is name after seeing it. You also get a glimpse of the Colorado River in the distance. Having arrived late to the Grand Canyon, I caught a few hours of sleep before waking up and heading over in the dark to Mather Point in hopes for a sunrise. To my surprise, the moon was setting in the west, an added bonus. Despite its brightness, you can still see some stars in the sky. This is the first photograph taken at the canyon on the trip. Having snow on the canyon walls also added another dimension to the scenes during the week. You don't normally think of it, but the south rim of the canyon has an elevation of 7,000 feet. It's going to be cold up there in there winter and early spring. This is a three exposure HDR using a single exposure for the sky. Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA, March 2023

After photographing the morning, it was time to go back to camp and cook breakfast. There were a few ravens around, but this one seemed to have a taste for corned beef hash. I had given myself an assignment to stop at the various shuttle stops during the day along the Hermit Road, and to use only my 50mm lens. The 50mm lens is considered to be the lens that best approximates human visual perspective. This is a two vertical frame panorama from the Trailview Overlook stop.
