After weeks, nay months of prevaricating Skyrim is uninstalled, tens of gigs of data trashed*, CCleaner has worked its magic and O&O is running to try to painfully make sense of my HDD in preparation for The Great Skyrim Reinstall of 2013™.

I'm ditching the TPC, because it hasn't been updated in some time and there are issues with missing textures, purple trees, distressed puppies.... Browsing through the latest version of STEP is making me excited about the various new texture mods that have been released since I last did this (November, or December, I forget) -- Re-Defined Dungeons ermahgerd; etc. -- and it's also encouraging me in not-so-subtle ways to use Wrye Bash for installation and organisation. This scares me, but they have a pretty comprehensive guide over there on how to use it specifically with a STEP set-up... nothing ventured, eh?

*I backed up my downloaded mods folders, just in case.

I've been itching to reinstall the game and update all my mods for a while now. Apart from adding in new things as I've found them, I've not done a proper update since I installed in Nov/Dec. I followed STEP and used the Texture Pack Combiner at the time, and now it's all really out of date. Some things weren't covered by STEP at the time because one of their core recommended mods had been taken down from nexus after some ruckus or other.

Because I followed STEP and used the TPC, updating textures is a bit more complicated, because some were hand-picked, some things overwrote others, etc. So really a complete reinstall is the best way to go. Plus, it just feels nice to have a fresh game now and again.

I don't follow STEP religiously, but I find it infinitely useful to help discover some very good mods, and then to decide what I want to use and what I don't. I believe TPC has been taken out of the STEP process now, so I'll have to check to see how they've made up for its loss, and whether I want to continue with TPC or not.

STEP is now recommending the use of Mod Organiser instead of NMM. It looks terribly complicated, but it also looks like it would provide a lot of benefits once the initial learning curve was dealt with. It seems it would make updating textures far easier in the long term, without necessarily requiring a complete reinstall. It also supports profiles - so one character can have one set of mods active, and another character can have different ones active, without requiring any awkward game breaking or reinstalls. That in itself sounds very useful.

So, a question: does anyone here have experience with Mod Organiser, and if so, what tips can you give me for it, what are its pros and cons, and do you think it really is worth using?
