Hospital Supply Station, Gondar, 1941.
My late father-in-law, Salvatore, was a medical officer during the outbreak of WW II. He was stationed in (Abyssinia) Ethiopia. Soon after this photo was taken, my father-in-law was captured by the British and spent three years in a prison camp in the desert in Africa.
As a medic, he was very busy, apart from battle wounds, the majority of Italian soldiers actually died from illness.
The Italian troops were poorly armed and unprepared for the wars they were sent to fight.

My father-in-law, Salvatore Pandozj, in Debre Marqos, Ethiopia in 1939. He is the last on horseback. He was captured by the British and spent several years in a prison camp in the desert. He was a medic during the war. From Wikipedia: "The Italians arrived in Debre Marqos 20 May 1936. Through an interpreter, Achille Starace, who had arrived by plane, told the surprised local inhabitants that he had come to free them from their oppressors, to their thorough bemusement. Debre Marqos was later isolated, and practically besieged by a revolt in 1938. General Ugo Cavallero, with sixty thousand men and supported by airplanes and tanks, had crushed the revolt by the end of May.[1] A major Italian fortification was located in the city" during the existence of Italian East Africa, and captured by the British Gideon Force and Ethiopian Arbegnoch (or Resistance Fighters) 3 April 1941 during the East African Campaign."
