Took this on recent holiday to Hayle in Cornwall. There was very little direct sun but the ambient light was still interesting. Had I not woken up at 5.00am and hot footed it to the shore I would have been too late to get this shot. The all too familiar blanket grey cloud obliterated any further chances of good shots only 20 minutes after this capture. I didn't mind too much though because I was desperate for the loo and headed back to the caravan with a similar amount of haste to the speed with which I arrived at the rocks. Must have been all that rich holiday food!

I waited about an hour for some full-strength sun to illuminate both the foreground rocks and the monument. Carn Brea offers superb views around mid to west Cornwall but finding a composition that excludes modern human influences makes traditional landscape photography here quite a challenge.

Finding a different composition at St Michael's Mount is quite a challenge. I decided to avoid the usual shot of the causeway lead-in and chose this creek to reflect the clouds and top of the mount to add some depth. I had no choice anyway, because on arriving at the mount there were already a couple of photographers with tripods on the causeway and another on some nearby rocks! The sun came out for no longer than 30 secoonds at most and then the light was all over.

There were few good sunsets on my 2010 holiday to Cornwall but this one was half-decent. The sun was long gone when I used my zoom for this view of St Ives from the estuary at Hayle. Shooting at this time enabled me to achieve a balanced exposure between land and sky. I also used a 2 stop ND grad to hold in the sky detail. I cropped the image in photoshop as I felt this strengthened the composition.

On arriving at the harbour at St Ives I was immediately drawn to the rippled patterns in the sand in the harbour. I converted the image to mono because I felt the image was more about texture than colour. Mono also simplifies the image as the middle distance boats and buildings are a bit cluttered.
