“Original Taurus” 1016 046 paired with 1116 146 approaching St Jodok am Brenner with an Italy bound working formed of 4 wheel cargowaggons.

Being part of the first batch of Taurus ordered by ÖBB, they are restricted to countries which have a 15kV power supply. Only a relatively small number exist in the ÖBB fleet with just 50 locos produced before the design was altered to feature 25kV operation.

Second generation Taurus 1116 260 passes Steinach am Brenner with a German bound intermodal.

The second (1116) generation Taurus features 15kV and 25 kV electrical systems which widens their sphere of operation and these, being the most useful locos for ÖBB, number 282 examples!

Although the fleet numbers 282, there have actually been 283 built as one was written off in an accident. The production line was still open at the time so an additional loco was built and took the number of the withdrawn one.

From what we could see from the short visit, they are a common user fleet operating both passenger and freight trains.

A third generation Taurus features 15 kV, 25 kV AC plus 1.5kV and 3kV DC operation and the fleet numbers 50 locos. This generation is distinguishable from earlier examples by the presence of cab doors - moved from a central bodyside position - and a smoother front end with fewer individual panels evident.

The E190 number is the Italian classification for Taurus locos - some run with it, others do not so it does not seem to be a requirement to run in Italy.

Taurus' or Taurii? A regular train from Turkey to Romania (travelling through Bulgaria) is operated using OBB Class 1116 Taurus locos.

Operated by Rail Cargo Bulgaria (a division of Rail Cargo Austria) and running from Ruse to Dimitrovgrad (BG) with Taurus the train is diesel hauled into and out of Bulgaria and runs round at Sindel where it is seen here.

1216 228 of ÖBB and carrying Rail Cargo Carrier branding is seen approaching Popovice with rj73 Vindobona from Praha hl.n to Graz hbf.

The ČD and ÖBB railjet sets operate in a common user pool while in Czech Republic and it is not unusual to see all mixes of locomotive liveries with all mixes of stock liveries, including standard red ÖBB machines. Perhaps more unusual is seeing a complete train with matching locomotive and stock!
