A drive up the Oregon Coast quickly reveals that it is going to be a lot about bridges. Fortunately, the state of Oregon has an esthetically pleasing philosophy about bridge design, and the bridges tend to always lend a picturesque quality to the environment. If you got to provide infrastructure for those pesky cars, you might as well make it attractive.

Here, the Yaquina Bay Bridge spans the bay at the coastal town of Newport. The picture was taken near the historical lighthouse.

Sunset on the second night of our 10-day road trip and the only sun we saw for almost the entire time.

Gold Beach was our first stop along the coast of Oregon. The town sits at a dynamic spot where the Rogue River meets the ocean. Looking at this picture one might guess at the origin of the town's name, however it has nothing to do with golden sunshine, and everything to do with the hundreds of placer mines that used to extract gold along the Rogue River.

Wildflowers bask in the hazy sunlight just south of Gold Beach. The southern Oregon coast between Brookings and Gold Beach is beautifully rugged with outcroppings of rock dotting the landscape along its entirety. The southern coast is further from major inland metropolises and consequently gets less traffic and more solitude. The towns along the coast here are laid back and subdued--nice places to relax and forget about what ails ya for a while.

If you're looking for the Mary D. Hume, you will find her along the Rogue River at the far northern extremity of Gold Beach. From the looks of her though, I can't imagine many folks come looking for her. In fact, the docent at the local visitor center seemed quite embarrassed when I mentioned her--as if her mere existence was a blight on the area. But, the old girl was built in Gold Beach in 1881 and served a distinctive service as a freighter, a whaler, and finally as a tugboat--truly this local girl made good.

These days Mary D. is looking a little long in the tooth. Still, I think she deserves a little respect, after all she is listed on the National Historical Register. I think that must be worth something.

The Heceta Head Lighthouse is considered to be the most photographed lighthouse along the Oregon coast but this is the best view I could get of it. We arrived at this rugged spot on a chilly, breezy Sunday morning. It was so cold that Marg didn't want to leave the warmth of the car, so I braved it alone. The wind was whipping water off the ocean and it was quite uncomfortable. Still I managed to get off a few clicks before beating a hasty retreat. The lighthouse keepers who manned this place must have been hearty souls.
