Designed by Billington and built as LBSCR 57'7" 9 compartment Brake Third No.641 (SR No.4019) to Diagram 201 (SR Diagram 203) at Ashford in 1916, it was withdrawn by BR in 1948 then rebuilt with steel panelling to Diagram 210 specifically for service in the Isle of Wight, No.S2416. Built as a 54' 7-compartment 'birdcage' Brake Composite (2nd/3rd) by the SECR in 1911 at Ashford, when transferred to the IoW in 1949 by BR(SR) it was converted at Lancing to a 4-compartment Brake 3rd to create a larger luggage van whilst the guard's birdcage was removed because of the restricted loading gauge.
