Thanks to some Amtrak ridiculousness, our PVs had to make overnight deadhead trips to Albany on the last Empire Service train of the night, every single weekend we ran last fall. This meant for plenty of hanging out in the back of the Hickory Creek with no paying guests to worry about. It also meant some fun photography, like this shot as we departed the maze of trackage at NYP.

Stored coal cars are just about all you'll see in this neck of the woods, about a dozen miles west of Eads. The temps were blazingly cold, the sort of wind that makes your face hurt, despite the deceivingly sunlit scene. I find this part of the world captivating in its sparsity, and the aging rail infrastructure that punctuates it makes places like this all the more compelling.
