deep water is across the river from alloy, and was also the western terminus of the Virginian Railroad, which ceased operations in 1962 when it was purchased by the Norfolk and Western RR. kind of cool that nearly fifty years later, the bridge is still painted for its original railroad.

more CPLs. these look to be relatively safe for the time being, given the lack of new construction anywhere nearby.

My family has been involved on some level with the canal museum in Easton for years. This summer, my dad is doing historical interpretation on the museum's mule-led canal boat rides along the Lehigh Canal in Easton.

If you're looking at the fried-egg target on the bow of the boat (not even remotely what an original canal coal barge looked like- those were about eighty feet long and a fair amount wider) and thinking, as many train enthusiasts might, "gee, that looks not unlike the logo of the Lehigh and New England Railroad!," well then pat yourself on the back- the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company was not only the outfit that built the Lehigh Canal, but they were also the parent company, some years later, of the L&NE.

The Canal Museum (online at canals.org, if you're wondering) is absolutely a hidden gem of the Lehigh Valley, and for anyone interested in the history of the area, it's a destination not to miss. For a train nerd like me, it tells the story of how coal was first transported south from the anthracite mines of Northeastern Pennsylvania to the Lehigh Valley, which I find pretty fascinating. It also doesn't hurt that the canal itself is nestled right between the Lehigh River and NS's very busy Lehigh Line, so your chances of seeing a train or two while you're there are pretty good.

I know it's going away, and I know everyone (including me) has this very same shot at Palisade, but goddamn if I don't love sitting there along the river listening to the ducks and watching the clouds roll by. That said, 844 coming by one of my favorite spots, even in the wrong direction, is pretty much perfect. Also, it sounded AWESOME.
