Light traffic on a stretch of newly-built German Autobahn in the 1930s. A DKW can be seen approaching the bridge on which the photographer is standing. Note the total absence of barriers on the sides of the carriageway and the median strip.

Two young ladies peeking out of the sunroof of a Steyr 50 on the side of a stretch newly-built Autobahn. The car is registered in the city of Vienna (A = Wiener Polizeirayon). The international vehicle code 'D' for Germany helps to date the photograph to after the 'Anschluss' of 1938.

The photo was taken on the Munich to Salzburg Autobahn (today: BAB 8) near the Irschenberg exit. Special thanks to marlon_75 for identifying the location in the photo.

Country of origin: Austria

Light traffic on a stretch of newly-built Autobahn on a breezy summer's day. A Volkswagen Beetle and an Opel convertible can be seen driving towards the photographer. This shot – bearing the stamp of a photographer's shop from Hermsdorf/Thuringia on reverse – almost certainly dates from the pre-war period, as Thuringia was to become part of the Soviet zone after 1945. The sight of a Volkswagen – then known as KdF-Wagen – must have been extremely rare, considering that only a small number of prototypes existed at the time.

Light traffic on a stretch of newly-built German Autobahn in the late 1930s. The Mercedes 170 V in the photo is just passing the Hermsdorf/Stadtroda exit on the northbound carriageway of the Berlin to Munich Autobahn, known today as the A9. Note the total absence of barriers on the median strip and the extreme shortness of the entry and exit lanes.

A pair of seemingly brand-new Opel Olympias driving on the westbound carriageway of Autobahn 8 near the village of Aichelberg, southeast of Stuttgart. Apparently, the photographer was standing on the median strip while taking this picture. The words "Autobahn zwischen Stuttgart und Ulm" (Autobahn between Stuttgart and Ulm) are handwritten on reverse. In the background, Autobahn 8 ascends up towards Drackensteiner Hang, and further on to Ulm and Munich.
