I'm calling it. It's spring!

We reached 74 F today. This week I've seen the first chipmunk, first butterfly, and first turtles of the season, first mating birds, and today the first wildflowers (three species: a fair amount of this speedwell, a dandelion, and a chickweed bloom). Birds have been singing, pairing up, and seeking nest holes for a few weeks, and yesterday I saw at least six great blue herons on nests at their heronry. I've also seen a fair number of flies, and some maples have budded.

This isn't a thaw. This is spring!

PS I sneezed a lot yesterday, too, and started sneezing first thing this morning and realized it's spring allergy season.

Hardly an expert on trilliums, in southern Indiana I have only seen the white ones at McCormick's Creek State Park. I wanted to go there this week, partly to find this flower, but wasn't able to. Instead, I made my way to a small but showy park, thinking I'd at least see flowing water and possibly the first spring beauty blossoms of the year. I was delighted to find white trilliums (lower bloom) . . . and surprised to find bloodroot (which I usually see just a touch later than the earliest spring blooms like the first spring beauty). I only saw two blooms of bloodroot, just inches apart, but one was paired with this trillium for a particularly lovely twosome. From this angle, they could almost both be blooming from the trillium plant, but the leaves of the bloodroot are under it.

Macro Mondays: 5 letters (white bloom)

Not sure which species of trillium this is, perhaps a snow trillium, but I was delighted to find it because I only know of one spot in the area where they bloom, and it turns out there's a spot in my own town where they bloom.

Frost-covered harbinger of spring flowers. This whole scene is just an inch across or slightly more.
