How cold is it? If the photo doesn't tell the tale, then I can add that the thermomter was reading -35C or -31F when I snapped this image in downtown Whitehorse on December 8th. Given that January is usually about twice as cold as December, we may be expecting temperatures in the -60C or -75F range this winter. That should be fun...

It's not easy to take pictures looking into the sun. For this one, I more or less pointed and shot to avoid burning my eyes. The air temperature was about -35C or -31F which may sound cold but its just the beginning of December which is usually one of our warmer winter months - January should be twice this cold. In any event, the cold temperatures filled the air with ice crystals and led to what we call sundogs, rainbows caused by light refracting through those same crystals in the air. This one was especially spectacular as is was, in essence, two joined in a perfect half circle around the sun. And although it was noonish when I took this, you can see how low the sun was to the horizon in this northern latitude.

It was a very cold day today but a hike in the forest revealed the beauty that is the other part of winter.

The mountains around Whitehorse in southern Yukon. We've just finished with several weeks of minus 30 degree weather and it warmed to minus 15 today.
Image taken with a Canon 7D and EF 400mm lens on a Manfrotto monopod. Processed from RAW with ACDSee Pro 6. Cropped the right edge somewhat, increased the contrast and applied a little noise reduction to compensate.
