Built in 1821, this is the oldest county courthouse in the state of Mississippi to be in continuous use. It is one of five working Antebellum courthouses in the Magnolia State. The Colonial Revival structure with Classical porticos was remodeled in 1920. It is a principle property of the Natchez On-Top-of-the-Hill Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

There seems to be a bit of uncertainty within the state. The nearby courthouse in Liberty is regarded by many in Amite County as the oldest in the state. They claim that because this courthouse has had some changes to its exterior, that it is no longer the oldest. However, the Amite County Courthouse was erected in 1839 and has also had some renovations. Therefore I consider this one to be the oldest in Mississippi.

Natchez is one of Mississippi's most historic communities and its downtown is quite something to see.

This is the second oldest courthouse in Mississippi in continuous use; it was constructed in 1839-41 and designed by William C. Harrell. The oldest is located at Natchez in Adams County. This is one of five working Antebellum courthouses in the Magnolia State. The others are in Natchez, Port Gibson, Raymond, and Aberdeen.

Liberty is an interesting county seat; it is one of the smallest seats of government in Mississippi.

The middle portion of this Reconstruction Era courthouse was constructed in 1872. In 1948 the side wings were added. It was replaced as the county's courthouse since then; yet it remains well maintained in the center of the downtown Ashland square.
