Built in 1977, this courthouse was designed by architect Keith Brakke.

Jackson County used to administer a seat-less county located to the south of the White River called Washabaugh County. But, in 1983 Washabaugh was absorbed into the rest of Jackson County. That merger reduced the number of counties in South Dakota without governments to two: Shannon (today called Oglala Lakota) and Todd counties.

The Hanson County Courthouse was erected in 2010 using the designs of the architectural firm of Herm Harms. It replaced the county's previous 1904 courthouse, which I visited in the July of 2008 ( www.flickr.com/photos/courthouselover/2680238698/in/album... ).

Built in 1881, this courthouse is the oldest functioning county courthouse in South Dakota. It was expanded sometime during the 20th century.

South Dakota became a state in 1889, so this courthouse was built back when Hutchinson County was a part of the Dakota Territory.

Today, the county seat of Olivet is one of the state's smallest county seats with 70 people. The street here in front of this courthouse is United States Highway 18.

Built in 1990, this Modern construction was added to the east face of the 1926 Pennington County Courthouse. It has taken over as the county's official court facility.

Home to Mount Rushmore, Pennington County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of South Dakota, which is a state associated with population decline. The Black Hills area around Rapid City is an area booming with tourism dollars.

This was my 1,000th county courthouse to visit in the United States.

Built in 1911, this courthouse was designed by architect C. A. Randall. It is one of the states best courthouses, and is the twin to the 1910 Weston County Courthouse in Newcastle, Wyoming.

The Butte County Courthouse and Jail were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Belle Fourche is pronounced bell-foosh. It is located north of Spearfish at the northern edge of the Black Hills, and is the westernmost county seat in the state.
