The building is set on the High Street near Carrubbers Close (hence the name) which dates back as far as the early 1450s. Fantastic detailing and beautiful Corinthian columns on the upper floors of this building on High Street by architect John Armstrong, 1883.

The layout and design of Cockburn Street was by the architectural practice Peddie and Kinnear, however this upper section is of a later date and adjoins the North Bridge tenements to the rear, linked by an arcade. The lower section of Fleshmarket Close separates the two sections. These were designed by James Dunn and James Finlay, 1899-1902 in a Scots Renaissance style. Corner block to left with copper-domed circular tourelle corbelled out at 2nd floor to corner of Fleshmarket Close; crowstepped gable to Fleshmarket Close. 2 3-bay blocks to right with crowstepped gabled bays to centre, that to left with round-arched entrance to arcade.

The elevations to Cockburn Street (Nos 65-71) were designed to link with Peddie and Kinnear's buildings of the 1860's, and John MacLachlan's National Bank building of 1892-3 at 179 High Street and 73 Cockburn Street.

John Baxter, 1788-90. This was the former Merchants' Hall before they moved to Hanover Street. Band courses; fluted with rosettes at 2nd storey, bracketed cornice, blocking course. 4 giant fluted Doric pilasters rise from 1st storey. These features mark this as a standout building in the square.

The post box in Hunter Square received the special gold treatment after Edinburgh-born Sir Chris Hoy won his second cycling gold of the London Olympic games.
