Built 1385-1410, including earlier fabric and with alterations, including an exterior re-facing by the eminent William Burn, 1829-33. This is an outstanding Scottish ecclesiastical building, constructed on a monumental scale and includes a crown spire that is famous in the Edinburgh skyline. It's dominance is heightened by it's setting in Parliament Square on the High Street and also being located opposite the City Chambers.

Built between 1909-11, the Thistle Chapel at St Giles' Cathedral is the private chapel of the Knights of the Order of the Thistle, and was designed in an elaborate Gothic style by the architect Sir Robert Lorimer. The Chapel contains a wealth of ornamental stonework and elaborate oak carvings which feature distinctively Scottish motifs.

The exceptional stained glass throughout the kirk is predominantly by James Ballantine and Sons (carried out by them between 1847 and 1894).

The chapel also contains intricate wrought iron work by Thomas Hadden.
