The building was constructed between 1910 and 1913 on the plans of the architect François Clermont (1857-1931). The building was inaugurated by President Raymond Poincare in 1914, during the 1914 Urban International Exhibition.

The Exhibition was an international exhibition in the district of la Mouch in Lyon on 50 hectares. It took place in 1914, its progress, however disturbed by the beginning of WW1 on 2nd August, which forced the closure of German and Austrian pavilions. It put forward the project of a modern and original city, which solved the problems related to urban development, new needs, hygienist theories and necessary social progress.

A former hospital of historical significance situated on the west bank of the Rhone river, on the "Presque-isle" area of Lyon. First erected in medieval times, the building originally served as the "Confrérie des frères pontifes" (est. 1184), a pontifical meeting-place and refuge for both travelling and local members of the clergy. However, when the first doctor Maître Martin Conras was hired in 1454, 'Hôtel-Dieu' became a fully functional hospital, one of the most important in France. In 1532, 'Hôtel-Dieu' appointed former Franciscan/Benedictine monk-turned-doctor and great Humanist François Rabelais, who would write his Gargantua and Pantagruel during his tenure here.

Massive expansion projects in the 17th century by Ducellet (under Louis XIII and Richelieu) and in the 18th century by Soufflot (under Louis XIV and Colbert) replaced the original building with the grandiose wings and courts we know today. In fact, at its greatest point, the hospital extended from its present position beyond Bellecour to engulf the area now occupied by the central post office.

In May 2015, it was announced that the building, which ceased to function as a hospital in 2010, will be converted to a luxury hotel.

This bridge takes its name from the Lycée Ampère because it leads right bank on the passage Ménétrier included in the college of the same name. The bridge meant that the students need not take detour bridges and cross safely.

The construction was marred by a tragic incident, the work was nearing completion when on 7 December 1844 a bolt holding a cable in its sheath broke. The bridge collapsed and 8 workers drowned.

The bridge was partially destroyed in 1944, a battery was rebuilt almost identical in stones (the middle one bears a commemorative inscription). The bridge finally reopend to the public on 3rd September, 1945.

On the Place Antonin Poncet is the belltower of the old Hospital of Charity. The hospital, built in 1622, was destroyed in 1934. Only the belltower (built in 1667) has been preserved. It was at that time the second largest hospital in Lyon after the Hotel God - the origin of the phrase "this is the pot calling the charity" could come from there.

The square is named after the Lyon physician Antonin Poncet (1849-1913).

Lyon is one of 10 cities in France to have been chosen to host a match in the UEFA Euro 2016 Championships.

Place Bellecour is the largest pedestrian square in Europe. In the centre is this equestrian statue of king Louis XIV by François-Frédéric Lemot (1825). Another statue, representing the Petit Prince and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, is at the west end of the square.

The Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière can be seen in the distance along with the Tour métallique.
