By Robert Macfarlane Cameron, 1899, with later additions. Free Style gothic church with transepts to north and south, on corner site to London Road and Marionville Road. Squared and snecked grey sandstone with red sandstone dressings. Moulded string course. Long and short quoins; tabbed surrounds to windows. Bays divided by buttresses with long and short quoins. Cross-finialled gable to west between 2 finialled, pyramidally-roofed square-plan towers with crenellated parapets and canon spouts. 2-leaf timber-boarded door with leaded fanlight over in moulded pointed-arched doorpiece flanked by lancets; 6-light window in ogee-arched surround above; arrow-slit to gable; 3-light windows to upper level of towers.

Ecclesiastical building still in use as such. Built for the congregation of Abbeyhill United Presbyterian Church. Currently known as Meadowbank Church. The church occupies an important corner site, the west elevation effective seen as travelling eastwards out of Edinburgh, the south elevation linking visually to similarly detailed buildings to east. The later church hall is constructed of the same materials.

Designed by Edinburgh City Council Architects Department and built in 1968, the Sports Centre was the main venue for the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, and also hosted the 1986 Commonwealth Games but is now in a state of disrepair. The velodrome’s importance in developing Scottish sporting stars has recently been highlighted by the success of multi-Olympic medal winner Sir Chris Hoy, who first took up track cycling at Meadowbank.

The stadium is simple and strong, but not particularly elegant. It expresses structure in a way redolent of Pier Luigi Nervi’s stadiums in Rome. There are no doubt architects in Scotland more than capable of replacing this Stadium with not only a better building but a more beautiful one. It does have some admirers however.

The Save Meadowbank Campaign’s architect estimated that “£27m would upgrade the entire facility without involving any sale of land, and provide a new covered velodrome on site. This figure included more than £3m for construction industry inflation which if we remove brings the sum to £24m.” The council however have hired Reiach and Hall Architects to draw up plans for the future of Meadowbank Sports Centre and Stadium and have three different options on the table…

By respected architect Peter L Henderson, 1882. 3-storey and attic tenement block with ogee-roofed octagonal corner turrets, and shops (former bank) to ground floor. Snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings (polished grey and black granite facing to shop). Continuous cornice and fascia to ground floor; cill course to 3rd floor; eaves cornice. Round-arched openings to shop. Curvilinear gable flanking wallhead stack to 2 bays to centre; windows flanked by pilasters corbelled out at 1st and 2nd floors. Apex stacks breaking eaves (right crudely rebuilt) and flanking ball finials.

A striking landmark on an important route into Edinburgh. They were built for Miller and Co, who owned the adjacent foundry and the ground floor was originally used as their office.

The original Meadowbank stadium (on the same site) hosted the Commonwealth Games of 1970 and 1986 but the multi-sports facilities fell into a state of disrepair. Councillors decided plans by a multi-disciplinary project team appointed by the council. Edinburgh-based architects Reiach & Hall and The Sports Consultancy along with key partners, Sportscotland and Edinburgh Leisure were consulted. National governing bodies of sport and the clubs using Meadowbank were consulted as part of the stakeholder engagement.

Holmes Miller are chosen architects with work commencing in 2019, due for completion later 2022.
