Bab Agnaou is one of the best-known gates of Marrakech, Morocco. Its construction is attributed to the Almohad caliph Abu Yusuf Ya'qub al-Mansur and was completed around 1188 or 1190.

The word bab comes from the Arabic word meaning 'Gate' or 'Door'. The name agnaou is believed to be of Berber origin and had multiple historically reported meanings including "mutes" and, later on, "Black people" (or the Gnawa); however, it's unclear what exact connotation the name had in this case.âIt might also be translated to "a sheep without horns". The potential reference to the Gnawa might be explained by the fact that the gate is in the southern part of the city and faces partly southwards, thus away from North Africa and more towards sub-Saharan Africa.

Just about every historic place we went, there were knowledgable and well spoken guides for hire. Often times they spoke 3 or 4 languages. We even had one (not pictured here) that spoke seven!

We were quite happy with the time we spent with Hassan at Aït Benhaddou. He took us on a terrific tour of famed UNESCO World Heritage Site Aït Benhaddou. Hassan was quite soft spoken and mature for a young man, and his pride in his historic Berber back yard shone so brightly!

One of our first major road trips out of Marrakech with our guide Abdelhak, was to visit UNESCO World Heritage Site at Aït Benhaddou. This site is an historic ighrem or ksar (fortified village) along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh in Morocco. It is considered a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

The ksar has been significantly restored in modern times, thanks in part to its use as a Hollywood filming location for many Hollywood blockbusters like Lawrence of Arabia, The Last Temptation of Christ, Gladiator, to name a few.

Additionally, UNESCO reports that the ksar has "preserved its architectural authenticity with regard to configuration and materials", by continuing to use traditional construction materials and techniques and by largely avoiding new concrete constructions. A local committee is in charge of monitoring and managing the site.

Galleria Umberto I is a public shopping gallery in Naples, southern Italy. It is located directly across from the San Carlo opera house. It was built between 1887 and 1890, and was the cornerstone in the decades-long rebuilding of Naples—called the risanamento (lit. "making healthy again")—that lasted until World War I. It was designed in the Stile Umbertino by Emanuele Rocco, who employed modern architectural elements reminiscent of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. The Galleria was named after Umberto I, King of Italy at the time of construction. It was meant to combine businesses, shops, cafés and social life—public space—with private space in the apartments on the third floor.

The Galleria is a high and spacious cross-shaped structure, surmounted by a glass dome braced by 16 metal ribs. Of the four iron and glass-vaulted wings, one fronts on via Toledo (via Roma), still the main downtown thoroughfare, and another opens onto the San Carlo Theatre. It has returned to being an active center of Neapolitan civic life after years of decay. The building is part of the UNESCO listing of the Historic Centre of Naples as a World Heritage Site.
