With her cub in tow, a mother leopard launches across a ravine along the Ewaso Nyiro River in Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve. Leopards, some of the best feline climbers, are also good jumpers, covering upwards of 6 meters in a single bound. The leap is easy for her and her smaller cub. In many cases these cats don’t chase their prey but simply wait in hiding for prey to pass by, pouncing on the unsuspecting animals at the appropriate moment. #Leopards

A leopard bids farewell before moving off in the Serengeti bush. He is as perfectly at home in these grasses as he is in the acacia trees that dot the horizon. The leopard's spotted coat provides wonderful camouflage, making them all but invisible to most animals, when they crouch in the grasses and underbrush. Only their scent tips off many an approaching animal. The life of a leopard is mostly solitary, punctuated only by visits from a mate or the few years of early development spent with a parent. They survive solely by their own merits, with no assistance at completing the daily tasks necessary for survival in the wilds of Africa. How many of us can make the same claim? #ILoveWildlife #ILoveCats #WidlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Wildlife #Conservation #Leopards #RespectWildlife #BigCats

A female leopard and her young cub playfully interact in a tree in Ngorongoro Conservation area. She has successfully taken a gazzelle which she had carried to the top of the tree. Leopards are the smallest of the 4 big cat species. #BigCats

Earliest references to this idiomatic expression in English and American literature date to the mid ninetieth century, but its origins remain elusive, and will likely remain so. That being said, one could easily imagine the lack of speech that would be rendered if a cat were to grab one's tongue. If that cat were a leopard, mind you, I think one might lose more than just a tongue. Powerful jaws and limbs are the two features that make the leopard the world's most adaptable and widespread big cat. Tremendous climbers and powerful swimmers, these felines are some of the most agile predators in the world. Recent videos have emerged showing leopards jumping into rivers to carry out crocodiles. As the day comes to an end, this leopard's capacious yawn is captured by a rim of light from a setting sun. It makes me happy that this cat isn't out to get my tongue, anytime soon. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Leopards #DrDADBooks #Canon #WildlifeConservation

A leopard hides in the brush beneath a large acacia tree. We only know that she is there because someone saw her descend from the tree earlier. Even though we are only feet away she is barely visible. The density of the brush makes it difficult to auto focus, and so I switch to manual. I imagine that a lone gazelle walking through this acacia forest could easily fall prey to this animal, completely unaware of its proximity. Although their striking, spotted coat would seem to make it stand out it actually helps disguise them in a number of environments. She is aware of our presence, but at least for now, we don't represent a threat. #ILoveWildlife #ILoveAfrica #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #BigFive #Cats #Leopards #BigCats
