At the Chicago & North Western’s Butler yard just west of Milwaukee in early May of 1991, A Conrail SD60 and a CSX BQ23-7 are resting over at the diesel ramp.

That very unique CSX unit with the expanded crew quarters, one of only ten ever built, had been part of a power consist that traveled up to Wisconsin on a Pleasant Prairie coal train. – None of the BQ23-7s survived, all were scrapped in 2001. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©

Two Conrail freights are rolling past each other near Rolling Prairie, Indiana on October 22nd, 1993.

The CR 6975 leader was designated an SD40-2R, which had been rebuilt by Conrail from an SD40 of Pennsylvania Railroad heritage, and as of this posting it looks like it had just recently been retired by CSX as their #8876, so it could be destined to be rebuilt yet again and will reappear at some point as one of the CSX 4300 number series SD40-3s. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©

Out of the wide variety of run-through power I remember catching on Conrail’s busy Chicago line, CSX is the railroad I probably saw the least – But the morning of May 28th, 1999 Conrail TV24X had CSX C40-8 #7528 leading this fast-moving Trailer/Van train eastward near Pinola, Indiana. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©

On April 21st, 1991 a pair of brand new GE model C40-8W locomotives are leading a westbound Conrail freight at New Carlisle in northern Indiana. – After the split-up of Conrail both of these locomotives went to the Norfolk Southern and as of this posting are still working this same territory as NS #8359 & #8357. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©

Having departed their terminal of origin near Boston about 39 hours before, the first light of a new day is shining on fast-moving westbound Conrail train TV-7 which has cleared La Porte, Indiana and is now on its final sprint towards the big railroad city of Chicago. – October 23rd, 1993 ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©
