It had been a while since I had hiked out the lava, so I went again last night. In January, the beach that had formed since summer collapsed into the ocean. Since then, there has been a single lava tube, several feet wide, spraying into the ocean. The height of the lavafall was 40-50 ft.

The National Park now keeps the crowds ~1000 ft from the lava and ~200 ft from the cliff. Unlike before, when 100% of visitors would step over the ropes to see the lava and the rangers didn't care, they are actually enforcing the restriction now. It was actually a bit difficult to get a clear view of the lava.

The Magellanic Clouds, two dwarf galaxies that orbit the Milky Way Galaxy, are typically only seen in the southern hemisphere. However, while playing around in Stellarium, I noticed that the Large Magellanic Cloud actually attains an maximum altitude of 1° above the horizon in Hawaii. Naturally I decided to try to get a photo of it.

In order to have the least atmospheric haze possible, I went up Mauna Kea. I waited for a clear night so that Halemaumau, one of the two erupting volcanoes on this island, would be in the photo too. Both objects are visible above the flank of Mauna Loa, and Saddle Road, the highway across the island between Hilo and Kona, crosses the image.

Shot on a Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 at f/2.

I recently snagged a 1970s-era Nikon 1000mm f/11 mirror lens off eBay from Japan. It's rather difficult to use--any tiny vibration from wind or the camera (including the mirror flipping around) will completely ruin the photos. I built a bracket that enabled me to mount the lens between two tripods for maximum stability, and my first opportunity to test it out was in Volcanoes National Park. These two photos were taken from the Jagger Museum of the lava inside the Kilauea Crater.

Many tourists watched the lava on my live-view-showing camera screen, and a handful took photos of the screen instead of the actual scene...
