Geburt des Buddha im Lumbinihain aus der Hüfte der Königin Maya, Gandhara, 2. Jh. n. Chr., Schiefer

In der Mitte des kleinen Reliefs erhebt die Königin Maya die Arme und berührt so einen Ast des Plakschabaumes. In diesem Moment gebärt sie aus ihrer rechten Hüfte Siddharta Gautama (Budda), der die Religion des Buddhismus stiften wird. Die Geburt des Buddha hat sich 563 v. Chr. in Lumbini nahe der modernen Grenze ereignet, die Nepal von Indien trennt.

Birth of Buddha in the Lumbini grove from the hip of Queen Maya,

In the center of the small relief Queen Maya raises the arms and touches a trunk of the Plakscha tree. In this moment, from her right hip she gives birth to Siddharta Gautama (Buddha), who will found the Buddhist religion. The birth of Buddha occured in 563 BC at Lumbini near the mordern border separating Nepal and India.

Das griechisch-römische Ägypten behielt die alten pharaonischen Bräuche der Bestattung bei und ließ die Toten mumifizieren. Allein Hals und Gesicht blieben zunächst frei und wurden durch Stuckmasken abgedeckt oder ersetzt. Diese Masken besitzen offensichtlich individuelle Gesichtszüge und daher wirken sie wie eine Porträtgalerie der europäischen Antike.

Greco-Roman Egypt retained the ancient pharaonic customs of burial and had the dead mummified. Only the neck and face initially remained exposed and were covered or replaced by stucco masks. These masks obviously have individual facial features and therefore look like a portrait gallery of European antiquity.
