This stone sculpture depicts Robert the Bruce in chain mail with his hand on the pommel of his sword. To the back is his shield and axe, and on the plinth below is a carved shield with a lion rampant. The statue faces south towards the location of the Battle of Bannockburn where Robert the Bruce defeated King Edward II of England on 24th June 1314, despite being outnumbered two-to-one. To the background of the photo is the famous Stirling Monument to William Wallace the patriot and martyr who became Scotland’s National Hero.

Established in 1745 by the 3rd Duke of Argyll, the town of “Inveraray” in Argyll and Bute, Scotland sits near to the head of Loch Fyne on its western shore. It is a former royal burgh, the traditional county town of Argyll, and ancestral seat to the Duke of Argyll head of the powerful Clan Campbel. This photo was taken hand-held from the deck of the passing paddle steamer the “PS Waverley” on a rather murky day out.

Coastal fog or “Haar” regularly occurs along the North East Coast of Scotland between April and September each year. The sea breeze brings the haar over land, sometimes for several miles bringing with it a significant reduction in temperatures. Here in this photo Dunnottar Castle is steadily being engulfed with it, but it doesn’t stop the faithful visitor from spoiling their tour.

So named for the their distinctive ridges “Aonach Dubh” “Beinn Fhada” and “Gear Aonach” on the Bidean Nam Bian Mountain, are the “Three Sisters” the most photographed landmark in Glencoe rising up from lush, green valleys, the peaks are road-facing and best seen on foot, where you can take in the full majesty of the region’s much beloved natural landmark. This photo was taken from a point in Glencoe called the Study, and just above it stands my Son gazing across the glen at this wonderful sight.

The kings of England repeatedly sought to extend their rule north of the border into Scotland. The death of Margaret, the queen of Scotland, in 1290 gave Edward I of England the chance to take over the country, but his intentions were dashed with a major defeat at the hands of William Wallace on September 11, 1297, at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. The original wooden bridge was set on fire and destroyed in the battle, this bridge today was probably built in the mid 1400s and remains one of the best medieval masonry bridges in Scotland. The Wallace Monument can be seen clearly in the background.
