My Wife and Son at “Fionn’s Rock”, where some people believe it to be a glacial erratic deposited during the Ice Age, but the precision of how the stone is placed makes this unlikely. Another theory is that the stone was raised by humans in the Neolithic period, but if this was the case their purpose is a complete mystery. An old Celtic story has it that an arrow fired by the Ledgendery Celtic hero Fingal from “Creag nan Eildeag” a nearby hill split the stone in two….. So, Erratic, Neolithic, or Legend…….it’s your choice, it’s still an imposing view.

Sir Walter Scott once described Glen Lyon as the longest, loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland, how true he was, as near to the hamlet of Camusvrachan within the glen, lies a cluster of old stone cottages at Balmenoch where you can venture up Gleinn Da-Eigg and eventually encounter one of the glens most striking rock formations, “Fionn’s Rock” or “The Praying hands of Mary” This was my autumnal excursion to see and photograph them for the first time, and I was amazed at the beauty of not only the stones themselves but the view they commanded looking right down Glen Lyon itself. Spectacular to say the least.

Glencoe Lochan is a tract of forest located just north of Glencoe village in the Scottish Highlands. It was planted in the 1890s by Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal, with trees transplanted from the Pacific Northwest of Canada. After acquiring the Glencoe Estate in 1895, Smith and his wife, Isabella Sophia Hardisty, moved from Canada to Scotland. Soon after their arrival, Isabella became increasingly homesick for her ancestral lands in Canada. In an attempt to abate his wife's depression, Smith had this forest painstakingly planted, and granted it to her as a private refuge.

A view from the Ballachulish shoreline looking eastward up Loch Leven with “Sgorr na Ciche” The Pap of Glencoe just to the centre right. The 2.434ft Graham (a mountain over 2.000ft in Scotland) “Pap of Glencoe” is a familiar landmark at the northern end of Glencoe where the River Coe enters Loch Leven. It is popular with climbers as easy access is gained from Glencoe village itself and the views from the summit are sensational never mind from the shoreline.

Autumn colours at the “Glencoe Lochan” which is near to the village of Glencoe Scotland, this extended platform is a good advantage point as it allows you to either include it into the photo (as I have done) or to walk forward and omit it and the overhanging branches entirely giving an unspoiled view across the Loch to the “Pap of Glencoe” the mountain in the background. Individual choice!!
